At Tod Optometrists, we are really honoured to be serving the community in every way we can. Recently, and we think it’s because of our new range, we have seen a lot of children come through for eye checks. Although, saying that, our recent practice re-fit may have helped too, making the practice much more child friendly.
With children come interesting stories about why parents think their child may need glasses and what happens if they get glasses. We would love to debunk the myths as well as give fact based information to help you make an informed choice about how to proceed with children.
Myth 1: “Glasses might make my child’s vision worse or give them a lazy eye”
An optometrist only prescribes glasses when it is clinically necessary. The glasses are individually designed to help relieve the stress and strain your child is already putting on their eye muscles. In fact, in some cases, by not wearing glasses, their eyes can actually get worse, so you should always encourage to wear glasses as advised by the optometrist.
Myth 2: “My husband and I don’t wear glasses, so my child will not need them either”
While there are definite genetic links to needing glasses, there are many other factors that cause short sightedness and other eye condition including environmental, diet, ethnic background, and what your child does with their eyes. By having a free NHS funded eye exam, you can rest assured you know where your child is with their vision.
Myth 3: “Contact lenses are not safe for children”
At Tod Optometrists, we keep up with the latest research in child vision and what we have learned is children are individuals, just like adults. And because of this, just like how most adults can wear contact lenses, so can children. Sometimes contact lenses are better than than glasses, especially when playing sports, or helping their confidence if they are struggling wearing glasses.
We hope this helps clear up some well mentioned stories we hear and look forward to continuing our service at Tod Optometrists. Call us today on 01416476502 to book your next eye check, or book online now!
